Reading: Based on the nature of your project, read 1 reading on the genres and rhetorical conventions of scholarly articles:

Week 3 -- Jan. 25

Homework:

- Write a research plan for how you plan to expand the scholarly scope of your research and the steps you have taken/will take to do this
- Write an annotated bibliography of 10+ sources you're planning to add to your project. In each annotation, summarize the source's argument and explain specifically how you'll incorporate it into your argument

Research Analysis Activity:
- Individual analysis:
  - choose an article that's similar to yours: similar kind of object of analysis, similar kind of method of research/analysis, etc
  - examine the #, location, and types of sources used in articles in your target journal.
  - Apply the BEAM lens to analyze the role these sources play in the argument: what kind of distribution of sources do you see? how well does BEAM describe source use in this journal?
  - Record observations in Project Log to incorporporated into Scholarly Journal Analysis (which will become Scholarly Article criteria)
- Small group discussion: what trends do you see across journals that we might call best practices for these areas of research?
- Large group discussion: share findings with class, add to journal analysis notes
Project Log: Planning for next revision steps: Based on your observations about source use in target journal (which you'll revise and expand as you look at other articles in your issue):
- Where do you need to concentrate your research energy for your revision?
- What additional source types and topics (if any) do you need?
- What organizational changes do you need to make to your current project draft so that its patterns of source use match those of the target journal?

Week 4 -- Feb. 1

- who is the audience of your target journal?
  - recap from Journal Analysis, but keep in mind as you examine treatment of different sources in terms of what's common/familiar knowledge vs. what will be new and need explanation
- how do authors write for that audience about different types of sources:
  - Background, Exhibit, Argument, Methods sources
  - Sources use in different parts of the article
  - Any other patterns you see
- Discussion: articulating conventions:
  - What patterns do you see?
  - What style guidelines do you need to use when writing about sources?
- Project Log entry (due by 9am Friday:
  - Review your current project draft: what changes are needed to make it match the style of your target journal?
